Sam Winter clearly recalls the fi rst time he became aware
of the health needs of transgender people. “When working
in Hong Kong I met a young person who had recently selfidentifi
ed as a trans girl. She had been thrown out of the
family home by her parents, and could not fi nd a job because
of her male ID card. She started to use drugs and developed
mental health problems. I knew then that I had to change my
life to do something to help. I saw the potential of being able
to make a big difference in a new and specialized area”, he says.
